“Rabbit Stew” At Owner's Risk Series ©1973

About Susan Ressler     Inquiry

One family took me into "the bush" to hunt rabbit. I watched the father build a tent out of birch and then set the snares. While he took off hunting for big game, I stayed with the women and children by the fire. We had "bannock," a simple flour and water bread, and I ate nothing but rabbit for at least five days or more. On returning to the village, I saw that rabbit (along with peanut butter and pasta) were mealtime staples. I saw children's eyes light up when rabbits were skinned, and dogs and cats danced while the stew was cooking.
