 Ferrari 365 GTB Daytona C S/N 16407 ©1979 Early morning Daytona 24 Hrs Feb 5th 1979 Drivers John Morton and Tony Adamowicz. This ten-year-old car raced with a large wide black band painted diagonally across the hood and fenders. This black band was a tribute to Otto Zipper who had passed away the night before the race in his motel room. Otto had prepped the old car at his Hollywood Modena Motors.Interscope Racing’s turbo Porsche 935 of Danny Ongias and Ted Field was the “winning” car. It crossed the line on the starter after waiting for the end of the race on the track apron at the start finish. The Interscope Porsche had not completed the final lap within the required percentage of their qualifying lap this rule was there just to stop such finishes. Daytona being an FIA race required the factory to lodge any protest and Ferrari was racing the newer BB512 and was not inclined to spend the money or time on a “Classic” ten-year-old car. Still a ten-year-old car against the best GT Racing Cars finished second after twenty-four hours of flat out racing. |
