Doing a succession of one-nighters on the road, especially on a small-city tour, can leave you disoriented after a while. All the airports, hotels, malls, and venues – already disturbingly similar – can start to run together into one surreal continuum and leave you struggling to recall exactly where you are today.

One afternoon, after flying into Johnson City, Tennessee from Harrisonburg, Virginia on the band’s leased “Doobieliner,” we got into a limousine to take us from the airport to the hotel before the afternoon sound check at the local arena. The TV in the limo was on but the sound was turned off and no one paid any attention to what was on the screen until I noticed how uncannily the local program that was playing captured everyone’s collective headspace – a re-run of “The Twilight Zone.”
