Doobies in Kitchen, Montara, California ©1978 In the late ‘70s, the Doobie Brothers bought an old residential house way out in the woods in Montara, California, to use for rehearsals. Montara is located along the coast, about halfway between San Francisco and Half Moon Bay on Highway 1, and is conveniently located close to pretty much nothing except the biggest seasonal surf break on the west coast, known as Mavericks. But Montara wasn’t chosen for its surfing. It was chosen specifically because it was about equal travel time from and to where each member of the band lived at that point, whether driving down from Sonoma, up from Santa Cruz, or even flying in from L.A.Part of my “behind-the-scenes” series on the band and its
crew, this photo of Keith Knudsen, Pat Simmons, and Michael McDonald
was taken in the kitchen of the house on a rehearsal break during which
they were reviewing and discussing an arrangement for one of their new
tunes. |
