Dee Dee Bridgewater, now one of the world’s most revered jazz vocalists, was 22 years old when she won a Tony award in 1972 for her performance in the Broadway production of “The Wiz.” A year later, she was in San Francisco recording vocals on drummer Norman Connors’ LP, “Love from the Sun,” in the company of Herbie Hancock, Hubert Laws, Eddie Henderson, Buster Williams, and many other jazz greats. This photo shows her in a pensive mood laying down a track in a darkened studio.
